Mr. Jim McLean, one of the world’s most recognized golf instructors, has helped develop PGCC’s comprehensive golf instruction program. Mr. McLean gives a golf clinic once a year at each of PGCC’s campuses and continually works with our golf faculty on teaching methods.
Mr. McLean is a graduate of the University of Houston, where he was a college All-American. His playing achievements include qualifying for the U.S. Junior, the U.S. Amateur (4 times), the U.S. Open (2 times), and the U.S. Senior Open. He also made the cut at The Masters when he was just 21 years old.
He is probably best known for his research on the golf swing, and his work on the ‘X Factor,’ which describes in detail, body motions, body angles, and body positions. Mr. McLean’s ‘Eight Step’ video is the all-time best selling video on The Golf Channel, and the all-time #1 golf DVD in America. His ‘Eight Step Swing’ book was ranked by Sports Illustrated as one of the top golf instruction books of the 20th century. The Eight Step book is used in our ‘Methods of Teaching’ class, and serves as our instructional manual.

Mr. McLean is also the owner of the Jim McLean Golf Schools at Doral Resort & Spa in Miami, Florida; PGA West in La Quinta, California; La Quinta Resort in La Quinta, California; La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California; and Grand Traverse Resort in Williamsburg, Michigan.
His professional achievements include: National PGA Teaching Committee member, National PGA Education Committee, National PGA Awards Committee, and PGA Master Professional. Jim is an Instruction Editor for Golf Digest, and the Instruction Editor and Advisor for The Golf Channel (where he appears regularly) since its inception in 1995. Tom Addis Director of Golf Business Education
Mr. Tom Addis III has served as President of the PGA of America, and is the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Southern California PGA. Considered one of the PGA’s most dedicated and active members, he has devoted his entire career to the game and business of golf. Mr. Addis has developed the golf business curriculum for PGCC, which includes all of the golf operations classes. Tom also teaches the ‘Rules of Golf’ and ‘Golf Operations’ classes at PGCC’s Southern California campus. Mr. Addis is also the owner and president of Medallion Golf, Inc., a golf facility design, construction, operations, and management services company. He was Director of Golf for many years at Singing Hills Golf Resort before starting his own management company.
Mr. Addis is the recipient of some of golf’s most prestigious national awards. In 1981, he received the PGA’s Horton Smith Award for his contributions to improving educational opportunities for PGA professionals. In 1988, he was awarded the national Golf Foundation Joe Graffis award for contributions to the game of golf. In 1989, Tom was named the National PGA Golf Professional of the Year. He is also a member of the Southern California PGA Hall of Fame.

Tim Somerville, Ph.D. President and Founder
Dr. Tim Somerville is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Professional Golfers Career College. He has a truly unique background in education, college athletics and golf. Dr. Somerville earned a Ph.D. in Education from Ohio State University, where he also taught and coached. His educational and sports background and teaching experience provide an ideal basis to serve as President of the college.
Dr. Somerville has been a college basketball coach, athletic director, and golf instructor at four-year colleges across the country. He was Head Basketball Coach at Texas Christian University, and also served as Assistant Coach at Bowling Green State University and Ohio State University.
For the past twenty-four years, Dr. Somerville has been in the golf education business. During that time, he was an owner and Executive Director of the San Diego Golf Academy for eight years. He also started the Golf Academy of the South in Orlando, Florida. After leaving that position, he founded Professional Golfers Career College. He is recognized as the senior educator among all professional golf schools.
Dr. Somerville is a leader in golf education and has helped develop many of the concepts used in golf education curriculum development. He has appeared in professional golf videos and has written many instructional articles for Golf Tips Magazine.
He has given golf clinics throughout the world, including in Japan, Korea, Malaysia; and the first junior golf clinic in mainland China.
Dr. Somerville directs the academic program and faculty performance of the college. He also teaches classes in History of Golf, and Attitude & Motivation. In the past twenty years, he has helped place more than one thousand students in golf careers.
Dr. Somerville is married to Sandi, Chief Financial Officer for PGCC.

Ken Ferrell, PGA Director of Tournaments
After excelling at golf in high school and college, Ken turned professional in 1981. He toured on American, European and Mexican PGA tours for four years. In 1984, Ken entered the business of golf working as an assistant at two Southern California private clubs, Yorba Linda Country Club, and then Big Canyon Country Club. During this time, he attained his PGA classification. During his apprenticeship, Ken also sat on the SCPGA Board of Directors for two years, and also helped as Assistant Golf Coach at California State University Fullerton.
In 1989, Ken was hired by PGA Senior Tour Professional Jim Colbert to open and manage Tustin Ranch Golf Club in Tustin, California. In 1992, he co-founded Team Golf Corporation, a golf management and consulting group. With Team Golf, Ken opened and operated three different golf learning and practice centers as well as serving as a consultant on twelve other projects including golf courses in the Pacific Northwest, California, and Mexico. Ken teaches the Golf Shop Operations classes, Country Club Management, Tournament Planning, and Principles of the Short Game. In addition, he directs all of the tournament play for students, which includes golf tournaments and the prestigious International and President’s Cup matches between faculty/staff and students.
